Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What is a desert rose? Why is your winery named after it?

    • The desert rose is both a beautiful flower and a crystalline rock formation.  The flower is best known as “adenium obesum” and is native to the Sahel regions of the Sahara plus tropical areas of Africa and Arabia.  The crystalline substance is a rosette formation of gypsum or barite usually found in arid sandy areas and left over from the evaporation of a shallow salt basin.
    • Sometimes you find beauty or something special in a place you least expect, like a rose in the desert or a desert/western themed winery in Northern VA. Bob has desert roots as he is from Eastern Oregon.

  2. Do you allow pets to visit the winery?
    • We are a ranch environment where animals are a large part of our lives so pets are always welcome on our grounds.  We ask that you keep them on a leash when visiting and clean up after them should they leave a “calling card”.

  3. Do you allow children to visit the winery?
    • We are a family oriented facility and children are always welcome when accompanied by an adult.  We have a special area set aside in the tasting room called the “Kiddie Korner” that has some fun toys for children to enjoy.

  7. Would you consider expanding your hours for special group visits or private events?
    • We would certainly consider opening the tasting room for groups of eight or larger outside of our normal operating hours if staffing permits. To submit your request, please call us at (540) 635-3200 or email us at info@desertrosewinery.com.

  8. Do you allow buses and limousines to visit?
    • We have limited parking but we are able to accommodate bus-sized vehicles. On busy weekends, the parking can be a little tight. We also welcome guests arriving via limousine service but ask that you call ahead and alert us if six or more people will be arriving so that we can ensure that adequate staff is on site.

  9. Do you grow and use your own grapes?
    • We like to use as much of our own grapes in our wines as we can. Most of our wines consist of our estate grown grapes but some wines consist of small portions of grapes from other Virginia vineyards.

  10. Do you have different operating hours in the winter?

  11. Some Virginia wineries do not have handicap access, does yours?
    • Yes – we have provided a separate ramp and parking facility at the rear of the building for those who may require handicap access.  In addition, we have reserved some parking spots closer to the building for those who desire less walking distance into the facility.
